Melissa & Doug Alphabet Sound Puzzle - I bought this puzzle for my nephew who just turned 3. I had previously bought one for my 1 year old daughter. She loves it so much and has actually learned her letters from this puzzle and that is why I bought one for her cousin. It is a great puzzle. Some of the pictures behind the letter are an odd choice for little kids, but they don't care. And if you have dogs, be careful because they chew up easily due to the wood-type material they are made out of. Our "T" is all chewed up now, but still works. I love Melissa and Doug toys. My next purchase will be the "Numbers" puzzle because my daughter is now starting take interest in counting. Children's Trumpet - Sure this one's a bit more than the other toy trumpets. But we had this one, it broke (after a year of daily use by our 1.5 year old boy). We replaced it with the cheaper one which broke in just a few weeks. I just surprized my son with this one for his 3rd birthday. He was so excited to have his trumpet back. Fisher-Price Kid Tough Portable DVD Player Blue - I bought this product at Walmart as a gift for my 7 year old son who has special needs. He loves DVD's but he also loves pushing the buttons and making things happen. I introduced this to him last week before making an 8 hour road trip for the holiday weekend. It was perfect! The buttons are big and he learned what they do very quickly. He's dropped it and tossed it a few times already. The worse thing that has happened is that the DVD came dislodged. The thing looks like we've had it for a long time already because he is very rough with toys, but it has held up wonderfully! I'm thrilled and highly recommend it to anyone who's child likes to be in control of his dvd player. Two quick things that I don't like for my situation, I wish the door could lock so he couldn't get it open. I am using a small piece of tape to keep him from getting it opened and from scratching the dvds. And it takes a little longer for the dvd to start playing. One of the parents mentioned her daughter's interest in learning how to read. I already had an earlier version of Leap Frog products,which I had purchased for a nephew so i decided to introduce Leap Frog and the Tag system to her. I knew this child was already motivated and just needed the right tools and encouragement. I presented her with several gift wrapped presents on Xmas eve. You had to be there to see this, she took the packages from her mother,and instead of waiting until Xmas she immediately grabed the Leap Frog, ripped opened the gift wrapped package and in literaaly minutes she sat down and was demonstrated how it should be used. She uses it daily and told her mother this was best xmas ever. She loves her Leap frog and tag sysyem its very user friendly for both parent and child. VTech Infant Learning Rhyme and Discover Book

VTech Infant Learning Rhyme and Discover Book - We got two of these Vtech Rhyme & Discover Books for our twins last Xmas (Dec. 2008), and they played with these at least half an hour at a time, several times a day. At 10 months later the kids (now a little over 2 years old) still play with them regularly, anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes a day, sometimes more.
The books have been smeared by sticky hands and wipe clean well, and they have been dropped countless times without damage. Just recently, 10 months later, we have changed the batteries (two AAAs) in one of the books, and the other one is still going on the batteries that came inside it.

The pros are:

• Price (you get lots of bells and whistles for this amount of money) and batteries included
• Durability
• Cleanability
• Visually interesting (Four panels or "pages," for a total of seven different pictures/sides to look at, plus a couple of two-sided movable pieces that make sound effects, and three light-up "tab" buttons in the shape of a lamb, kitten and puppy, each with their own sound effects)
• Huge musical variety -- some songs have a couple bars of vocals and some are just instrumental
• ("Ring around the rosie," "Twinkle twinkle little star," "Mary had a little lamb," "Little Bo Peep," "Hey diddle diddle," "Bingo," "Three little kittens," "This is the way we ...," "Old McDonald had a farm," "The farmer in the dell," "Rockabye baby," "This old man," "London Bridge is falling down," "Three blind mice," "Sur le pont d'Avignon")

The cons:

• The on-off switch has two volume choices, but the louder option is a little too loud for young ears. The lower volume is fine, and it would be nice if toy makers would put the volume switch somewhere less accessible to the child. My kids, and the ones I've babysat, all seem to like to crank the volume to the highest setting, and the highest setting seems as though it has the potential to damage hearing over the long term. (This is a problem with many toys, and not unique to this one.)
• It would be nice to have the entire song for some musical selections, but it's not a huge minus considering how many songs are included

Overall, based on my kids' experience with this toy, I would recommend this to my friends and/or give as a gift. -- by Phoebe Oh
